about the artist
When I need a label, I call myself an abstract expressionist, but I believe that I create with my own artistic "voice", and prefer my work to speak for itself. I'm particularly fond of images that sing with color, with form, with emotion, and of abstract concepts. A leaf, rather than "a leaf from Aunt so-and-so's Boston Fern", for instance. A hound running, rather than "my greyhound Gryffin having a romp." Or, in many cases, simply line, form, color and direct feelings. In that way, I hope that my work appeals to a wider audience, and demonstrates theories, even archetypes, rather than representation. I'm influenced by many things, including dreams, old cave paintings, my hounds, and of course, nature itself. My work is quite spontaneous and all comes directly out of my imagination. I find that the process of creating is as important to me as the end product. After all, as Aerosmith sings, "life's a journey, not a destination", and I believe that art is a journey as well..
I've been an artist all my life, and have a degree in fine arts from a small school in Maryland. I detoured into the computer field for quite some time, which was interesting, educational, and rewarding. After getting caught in the umpteenth round of layoffs, I decided it was time to try something new. I sold most of my things, bought an RV, and have been traveling the USA with my hounds ever since. I've rediscovered my love of the arts, and am working fulltime on my paintings and digital images. A good friend once said of me, "the only constant with Karen is change", and he has certainly been proven correct.
I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating it!
